Recently, the FBI has warned of a rise in "Business E-mail Compromise" (BEC) scams targeting businesses working with foreign contacts, and/or businesses that regularly perform wire transfers. Losses to date total over $214 million, with victims in every US state, and in 45 countries.
The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) outlines several versions of this scam, which result in wire transfers to fraudulent overseas accounts (often in China or Honk Kong), and often involve compromised high-level corporate executive email accounts.
We encourage you to read the FBI's PSA below and share this information with your staff, and even your business contacts. The section titled "Suggestions for Protection" contains measures that will help protect you and your company from becoming victims of this, and other, scams.
